These are my opinions but I have seen them said before so they may be consensus. Idk
>Solid gameplay (minus the lack of fixing level curve in HGSS) meaning the game stays consistent throughout in terms of difficulty and doesnt go on for too long or cut off too short
>Appealing graphic design. The 2d characters and 3d environments blended very well, the spritework was lovely and solid and above all iconic. Following Pokemon in HGSS was peak overworld innovation in the series.
>Fantastic music direction. The music in Pokemon has never been lackluster IMO but Plat/HGSS really suited the tone of the games and the settings.
>Chunky postgame that keeps your attention. They gave us tons to do and interesting ways to battle. I played these games way longer after completion than I played any gen 7 game. I played XY a lot because personally I got into competitive that gen but everything after I barely played after beating the bonus episode.
>Perfect amount of story. Not too intrusive, spread out very nicely across the gameplay.
>Lots of engaging side stuff to do. Safari Zone, Pal Park, Super Contests, rematches, game corners, Wifi Plaza, post-game areas.
All of the above applies to BW2 too. Basically; they put extra care and effort to make these games appeal to LONG TIME POKEMON FANS as opposed to FORMER/NEW fans like they are now.
