so what exactly made these games the so-called best in the series?
was it the battle frontier? the extended wifi capabilities? the following pokemon? all of the above? or something else?

Platinum? Best in the series? Nah. All it did was fix most of what made Diamond and Pearl bad, but not all of it.

Heartgold and Soulsilver were as packed with content as G/S and had an amazing execution, sprites were polished, the rocket invasion was made cooler with costumes. It did a lot of things right. It also gave us lyra, which is probably the only thing it did wrong.

I consider Black and White to be the best in the franchise. It gave us a really good plot, a challenging post game, even lore of all things. Sure some of the designs were really dumb, but others were amazing.

sprites arn't the only bad thing about gen 5
the gen 5 map was atrocious, it was literally a giant circle with a barrier at the end of almost every town/route blocking progression around the circle till you beat the gem. it was one of the most forced maps, in terms of how you choose to progress, across all games.

The sheer amount of content in them. Seriously, they're filled to the brim with stuff you can enjoy even after beating the game and therefore have great replay value. They are what define pokemon at it's core imo, a more complex game that's still fun in the end.

Kanto, Johto or Hoenn aren't shaped hexagonally or linearly like Unova. They have backtracking or branching out, which makes the game interesting instead of making the player go around a straightforward path with roadblocks everywhere just to create the illusion of a large region.

Kanto and by extension Johto you could go out of order fighting the gyms, it was entirely a huge circle. You could play the game your own way almost every time. While Unova you are forced to fight the exact same gym at the exact same point in the game. There's a huge difference between Unova and Kanto gen 5 faggots don't understand.

In Hoenn and Sinnoh too. You could completely skip Brawly or Winnona and challenge them later in any order. And you could fight Maylene and Crasher Wake in any order.

Games require time and money, the more money you have the least amount if time it takes.

If a fan game is created without getting money from outsiders (eg. kickstarters, donations etc) its gonna take years to develop with the points you made.

If they make the project public and start getting money to invest in the game, Nintendo and TPC lawyers will C&D that game until nothing is left. That’s why nobody wants to make fan games. Becausw they have the fear that everything they do will just go to the trash

Never were interested in Plat but I can speak for HGSS.

I LOVE HG/SS because I love post game, and they fucking had an A+ post game. If you don't care about post game and only care about the campaign, I can completely understand being apathetic about these remakes.

I haven't played platinum but wish I did. It was a comfy region with good music I guess, fixing DP's issues and adding post game would probably make them perfect for me

meh postgame, but that's the case for every first gen release, and DP had that whole island to explore which was cool.

awful regional pokedex, as in the fire elite 4 user only had a rapidash iirc.

But really slowness was the biggest issue that platinum fixed. There were other issues that even platinum didn't address like getting caught in snow/mud, and the worst HMs created

you don't get the peeko event until you beat winona, you aren't allowed to take the boat to slateport until you've beat brawly

I hate to sound contrarian but I have no idea why people love HGSS so much. They're good games, don't het me wrong, but tbey still keep most of the problems of gen 2. The level curve is still fucked, the pokemon distribution is still weird, and the trainers are still boring. I think HGSS took too much from GS honestly, they took too many of the shitty aspects of the original unfortunately instead of fixing them. Level scaling and pokemon distrubion should have been reworked (maybe use crystal as a basis) and trainers should hace had new teams. The fact half of the johto gym leaders don't use johto pokemon is ridiculous.

It is far from being a masterpiece. The level-curve is horrible, the wild Pokémon distributions are garbage, the story is shit, the adventure between Gyms 1 and 8 is boring as fuck, and it was the first game in the franchise to remove features from the previous games. HGSS was kinda shit.

Gamefreak is more worried about the casuals who buy pokemon for the story/adventure experience so will take down such roms and hacks that have well developed story and adventure. to them a battle simulator is going to take away their core casual audience. As the hard core battle simulator players will likely buy the game anyway, but a casual may not if they have already played an appealing story and are burnt out on pokemon.

The only big difference is that you can't battle people, but you can instead visit other secret bases and steal flags and get valuable items or even a trainer card star.
Hoenn Secret Bases have 85 decorations (35 Pokemon Dolls; all total making 120) and Sinnoh Secret Bases have 81 decorations (37 Pokemon Dolls; all total making 118).
They're almost equal on that at least.

I have to admit that gen 4 and 5 were the pinnacle of the series in terms of the games feeling complete and not rushed like gen 6 and 7.

To me, gens 1 to 3 were also very good but were an evolving stage for the game mechanics and the franchise.

Worst thing that happened to pokémon was game freak realizing that the games would have good sales no matter what their lazy mind would (not) come up with.

mainly cause 6 was the first region that made me wanna get a living dex what with all the selection available
of all the games i've played XY were my personal favorite (tied with plat cause the latter was my first)
seeing my old bro-mons and the new battles in 3D felt refreshing

meanwhile gen 7 just feels less than exemplary to me
not necessarily rushed, but lackluster nevertheless most likely due to a lower mon count and lack of national pokedex
still, i do think its a solid 7.5/10 overall compared to the previous games' >8/10

but for the record Unova always felt strange to me
partly due to a whole new pokedex and partly cause you needed to use the internet to catch any mons from a previous generation outside of poke transfer
theyre good games but i guess i wasnt as fond of em as most others

The reason why those remakes were so popular was because DPPt were shit. I was gonna stop playing after Platinum because it just didn't do enough to salvage gen 4, which really sucked due to how hype I was for it.

TPC was created in 1998 as The Pokemon Centre Company a year before GS was released. Unless you're trying to say they could see into the future.

Platinum is good because of it's various options for content and usable Pokemon. But HGSS? I think it's region bias when it comes to it having a decent reputation. I know plenty of people have already listed the fun improvements HGSS had over GSC but major problems still exist that make the game dull.

The gen 2 evos were generally better though. I quite like Honchkrow, Mismagius, Weavile.

That's the thing that gets me the most. There's no reason for only half of the gym leaders to use new Mon when there's at least one new Mon for each type as is.

All I know is that they made their pre-evolutions more relevant and worthwile and that on it's own makes them neecesary. No one would give a shit for Togetic or Piloswine or Yanma if not for their evolutions, for example. Whether due to infamy or general likability.
