You can fight pokemon and human enemies using both your character and your pokemon. You control your character manually. You can command your pokemon to use attacks on various targets using the Fight menu just as in the main games; an AI based on your pokemon's nature controls your pokemon otherwise. Taming pokemon is done by weakening them and using apricorns.
The game's main story can be completed without catching a single pokemon, but you'll miss out on a lot of content if you don't catch anything.
Ideally the story would be told through sparse cutscenes, talking to optional NPCs, item descriptions, and so on. The main emphasis would be on playing the game.
