The reason why so many mons turned out shit this gen is because they were all made with one format in mind: Doubles. However, there are some things that, obviously, GF threw a blind eye on, like you still need some sort of bulk to not get two shotted if you are going to be a slowmon or that being slow is not everything, Koko is one of the fastest mons in the game and it gets tons of usage in both formats (that and Electric is fantastic as a typing). Also, Trick Room, while more viable in Doubles, is still not a high ranking playstyle, yeah Magearna and Stakataka made it more popular, but one is outright banned and the other more or less uses it for itself rather than being a support mon like Cress.
Bottom line is, they thougt that they were doing some good ideas, but it only resulted in more than half of the roster being unviable.
Oh yeah and powercreep goes without saying. Seriously, it's only going downhill from here if they don't come up with a solution.
