It could have anything beside obvious detriment shit like slow start and deafetist and be good. It's stats and movepool are ridiculous. Normal typing isn't great but it's no rock/steel or bug/flying.

I do wonder if it would still be used if it had klutz. On one hand it's stats are insane but with how min maxed legendaries are today and with stuff like choice items it might be too risky.

No shit, Slaking would be one of my favorite Pokemon if it didn't have an ability that makes it useless.

It would be top tier in OU, but won't be Ubers. Something like Blacephalon isn't even Ranked in OU despite its massive damage output and great ability because it's too frail, slow, and can't boost like Volcarona can. Slaking only really gets Bulk Up and gets really messed up by special attacks.
Here is just regular Greninja does it Slaking
252 SpA Life Orb Greninja Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Slaking: 281-331 (63.7 - 75%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
It would still be top tier tho, it just has to be careful of strong special attacks and its low speed.

Just give it Sableye's original ability, Stall. Along with Regigigas. I remember theorymoning Regigigas with Stall in the thoerymon room and seeing that others thought it was a good idea to make Regigigas (and by extension Slaking) good.

It would be dangerous. It’s fast, has a wide movepool and bulk and lots of power. Return / Knock Off / Earthquake / Choice + Life Orb / Choice Band / Scarf = braindead offensive strategy.

Klutz still allows them to use Z-Moves, which would give him a nuke to take out anything that would wall him otherwise. The only "checks" all die to a normal move + a Z-Move (Tangrowth, Skarmory, Toxapex) and he can heal off whatever they do to him.
You could even handle them all with a Fire Blast set and Z-Earthquake. Or just Bulk Up on the Switch and comfortably 2HKO, his movepool is amazing.

It would definitely be OU. It's movepool is ridiculously, and it can run a ton of different sets. It doesn't have any true counters. And no Fighting types to worry about in Tapus: the Meta. It's only flaws are shitty STAB and its speed tier isn't what it used to be.

If Slaking got gluttony and recycle, would it be a better or worse snorlax? it can run bulk up instead of curse, but needs to run amnesia if it doesn't want to die to special attacks.

Special Attackers tend to be weak on the Def side, so it's not like they can freely switch in on it without dying to a STAB Return or whatever coverage it wants to run.

What if, instead of making any actual changes, Gamefreak added a (knock-off-able and Trick-able) item that removed the user's ability?
Regigigas would likely fare worse, not having the defensive or recovery movepool that Slaking does, but how would it fare?

Yeah, that's what I meant.

The notation for gen I stats varies between having just the Special stat or having both Sp. Atk and Sp. Def and just making them equal.

If you took away its ability, the only other thing holding it back would be its speed.
I've played some Pokemon Go, and Slaking has neither hindrance. It's pretty much a staple at every gym.
