i've been thinking about the worst route in a pokemon game, and this one came to mind first.
are there any worse ones?

It really wasn't that bad as most trainers there can be skipped and besides the slow walking you can get through the middle pretty quickly as I don't think there's wild encounters there

not to mention the fast moving pokemon that chase you around on the overworld while having to deal with the wind, making them really hard to dodge
did I mention that some of them can have arena trap as abilities? (dugtrio, trapinch)

I honestly applaud Masuda for having the balls to create such an infuriating place. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad route, it just works differently to others. The unavoidable wild encounters, especially some with arena trap (imagine having an electric type in first slot in a blind nuzlocke) along with the wind randomly slowing you down in certain directions is brilliantly evil.

Gen 5 is my favorite but i admit the geology is dumb there, Hoenn, however is perfect. It's an extremely small desert that is locked in from almost all directions by mountains, sea air and moisture can't reach that area so a desert there is completely natural.

The deserts in Gen 6 and 7 were horrible. I just look up a guide every time I do Haina Desert because I can't be bothered to deal with it. It's not hard, it's just really fucking tedious. Doesn't help that both deserts are in games with pretty good variety but your encounters in the deserts are of very few Pokemon.

The desert in Hoenn was the first one they made, and it made good geographical sense. It was fairly far from any major cities, and was a basin caused by rain shadows to prevent rainfall. Plus it fits the Land vs Sea dynamic of the region very well.

But now every single region needs a desert to stick the desert mons of previous generations in, whether that be in the middle of new york or wherever
