It's a bit weird because psychic type is more of a supernatural literal psychic type instead of the brainy/intelligent type.

There are a few pokemon in the psychic type that have High iq's based on their dex entries.

This. In the first movie jap sub Mew was basically a deity that could bring rains. Psychic was the ultimate type in gen 1.

It pretty much was. Only only other Psychic types resisted it, it was super effective against the only ghost and most bug types due to the overwhelming number of kanto poison types, and the only super effective moves against them were pathetically weak

Psychic was stupid good in both gen 1 and to a lesser extent gen 2. The best super effective move you had was twin needle, which was on Beedrill. Second best was pin missile from Jolteon. Both were terrible for obvious reasons. That, combined with Special being one stat in gen 1? Psychic was retarded.

Presumably, you just needed to be smarter than Ash 'Thunderbolt everything at once' Ketchum.

Aside from Ghost types which presumably wouldn't have been thrown around, getting your own psychic type would have helped, and there were many in gen 1.
