We thought it would be shit because the demo Greninja was locked to a neutral nature, and even if that was the case for the actual games it would not have been the end of Ash-Greninja

Everybody was wrong about Stakataka (originally predicted to be PU tier trash but it's pretty good in UU and OU in the right teams).

No it isn't.
It wasn't suspect tested ever, was never S tier despite what "random low elo smogonite op screencapped" says and most people were saying it'd be shit compared to protean since it absolutely needed a KO to get the ash form but at the time nobody expected specs hydro pump under rain to nab enough KOs to make this a common occurrence.
To be fair both abilities benefit from the other one existing, since you pretty much have to let it use a move to know which one you're fighting and act accordingly.
