It's not false equivalence because games, specifically videogames are not just about gameplay, but about the experiences that add to it. That's why people liked Pokemon Yellow despite being locked to a relatively bad starter Pokemon. Having your bros walk behind you in a virtual world added to the experience of the game, but it wasn't necessary.
BotW didn't need to look as gorgeous as it did because it wasn't really necessary - they could've made it look like Wind Waker if they wanted to, but they made a real effort to not only make it modern looking, but better than that. Because they thought that it added to the experience of the world. And it did. There are plenty of good games that don't look great. undertale, Minecraft, etc but are still loved by many.
