Just started Soulsilver, I... Forgot how actually boring the first routes are, I don't wanna go with boring Geodude and Hoothoot, when do the Pokemon start getting interesting?

After Violet is when the variety starts trying to improve, but the Safari Zone's where you'll really start seeing changes (mostly Pokemon you wouldn't be able to get until Kanto or Mt. Silver).

Much, much later in the game. Wait until the Safari Zone. I just replayed HG and put Raikou and Entei on my team because I realized how boring and overdone or just plain shitmons most of the region is, and wanted to do at least something new.

I bet there are plenty of pokemon you've never used on those routes. Try raising a Ledyba, or a Hoppip, or trade a Geodude with that NPC for Onix.

HGSS are great but sadly don't go far enough with integrating Johto pokemon into the region and so the selection early on is pretty dull.

Would have been sweet to catch Natu as soon as you get to Ruins of Alph and Misdreavus and Murkrow in Ilex Forest. If I remember right, Phanpy is available early in Crystal but unsure if HGSS kept this. An Elekid/Smoochum/Magby egg giveaway depending on your chosen starter could have also been a nice way of building variety

Save for the later routes that spam weepinbell and skorupi/drapion for miles. XY’s early route pokemon distribution and the large distance between the first two gyms was exciting. Then the later routes brutally killed all my excitement. Stagnant variety and huddled together gyms.

It’s almost like this game was rushed or something HMMMM....

The ironic thing about Gen 2 are that the few interesting Pokémon like Mareep and Heracross are the obvious go to choice and thus have been done to death, making them boring. Also (at least in gen 2) potentially interesting Pokémon like Natu, Phanphy and Eggexecute have straight up unusable movepools.

Many of the gen 2 mons like Sunflora and Stantler are powerhouses during the time you get them, but scale into late game as good as milk ages.

If you get a Hoothoot (or Noctowl, you can catch underleveled ones later) with Insomnia, Morty's gym battle becomes laughable. "Boring" isn't always a bad choice. I'm re-playing Platinum and having a blast with my female Geodude (I had never trained one before).

If you just wanna know when you can get Ralts (they appear in Route 34 after getting the National Pokédex), learn about swarms.

What's interesting about finding a handful of different rare pokemon on every route you go to? There's no incentive to stick around and look for a rare pokemon that might help you, because you'll probably find one later somewhere else anyway. Having more stuff just makes it all feel cheaper
