I found Gen 7's Elite Four harder than almost all the previous ones, mostly due to the whole maxed out stats thing. They were a bit easier in USUM, but it really depended on your team composition. Hau was definitely much easier than Kukui though.

OG Johto's was probably the easiest, only Lance's Dragonites are really a problem, and only if you don't have a strong Ice move user. Rolling in with something like Dewgong makes those Dragonites completely laughable. Tougher in HGSS though for sure.

It’s easier and it’s mostly to do with all of them being around the same level so you can fight them in any order instead of facing each member in a set order and each getting progressively stronger than the last.

it's because you'll have set up your team without considering a ghost counter, so when you hit the e4 it becomes more difficult

replaying HGSS right now and the elite four and the champion are ridiculous
have to grind so i can overlevel them and make it way less painful
don't know how i beat this when i was younger, probably has something to do with me not having only water pokemon

That was good though. Your Pokémon doesn't get close to enough levels for beating the individual members to have the steep level curve of some of the older games. It just means you'll only be in the sweet spot for one or two of the battles and the others will either be too hard or too easy.

The E4 always gets technically harder and in the later gens (Gen4+) you don't have the luxury of Badge and Type boosts. Also Gen 7's E4 actually uses EV spreads and (for the mostpart) movesets os that still makes them harder than anything in Gen 1 and 2 and 3.

I've been doing a Shitmon playthrough of every generation and I'd probably say Cynthia is the hardest. I only really beat her because I got good rolls,and had to reset like 4 other times. I'd rank them as

HGSS thanks to the physical/special split and updated movepools can be surprisingly challenging depending on your team comp. There are also some big flaws that can be taken advantage off, espcially on Lance. If your Gyarados is at least level 44, it can solo Lance with zero effort, and R2 Lance's Dragonite is the biggest set up bait in the universe because he almost always refuses to switch, even if he already used 3 Draco Meteors.
