Johto probably uses it's space the best though, why on earth would you want the map to be spread thin for no reason? Just makes the region more disjointed. With Johto you get an idea for how 90% of the region looks together

There's only one dark cave. The issue here is the caves weren't interesting in their design at all. They have so many optional areas, all with the exact same theme and tileset of rocks + water and it's boring.

I bet that white space between Azalea and Goldenrod is all ... just Goldenrod.
Like the city is even larger than what we get to see, and actually connects Violet, itself, and Azalea into one Megalopolis.

If you look closesly at the edge of Goldenrod (you see it better in a biger image) it's cave. My guess is Union Cave goes right to the edge of Goldenrod City. It's just that everywhere is bigger than the games show

The thing I hate about Johto is that all the routes are skinny and convoluted. They feel more like unused paths in a forest than actual roads

Because it is fairly nonlinear, a vast majority of Johto trainers are low 20s and have unevolved Pokemon. It makes things a slog and leveling up takes ages.

I'll take getting what we did of Kanto instead of making the caves slightly prettier. They fixed it somewhat for Crystal anyway, ice path actually had ice in it for example.
