Your mistake is thinking that they cut this design because they thought it was bad.

In reality, it was cut because they liked it so much that they turned it into a legendary, namely Lugia.

Farfetch'd is more memorable as "that one crappy gen 1 pokemon who's one of the few who hasn't gotten an cross-gen evo/pre-evo" than another shitmon who just happened to get an evolution later.

Farfetch’d is the literal ugly duckling of the franchise, and it becoming a swan misses the point of this and it preparing itself to become a meal. Embracing this has its charm.

The design philosophy of any Pokemon should never to make it be a "worthless joke". That obviously hasn't held true over the years, but it feels like the antithesis of the spirit of Pokemon.
