Electivire was winning until Infernape played the Blaze trump card. Paul pretty much exposed Ash for the fraudulent scrub that he is.

Ash outgrew that mentality after battling Paul enough times and accepting that there was some merit to pushing a Pokemon. Paul also started easing up on his Pokemon a bit from his encounters with Ash.

It was a fair strategy for battling Darkrai. The problem was that Ash then had 5 more Pokémon to deal with and no plan for them so he barely beat one of them.

Paul still beat Ash to a pulp every other time. Only time he didn't was when Ash pulled the "If you're losing, just evolve mid-battle and you win" trope with his Staraptor. Doesn't really matter cuz in the end, he still lost to a guy with factually stronger Pokemon.

I'm convinced Ash Ketchum is in fact Professor Oak's equivalent of Astro Boy. A robot with a soul. Programmed to explore the world and gather data sent remotely via satellites to Oak to research.
Thats why he acts so oddly. He has a flaw that corrupts his battle data. Some things get reset each region as Ash follows his internal AI code of practice. As soon as he meets something completely new he unconsciously deliberately loses to garner sympathy and find new data.
The indigo league was a trial run, and Gary was in on it. Thays why he "became" a researcher out of the blue, he realised there was nothing more he could contribute to the project.
Its also why he has no dad, yet has a mum. His mums a plant. A researcher in disguise. Whole town is in on it.

I feel like people are sleeping on Ash's Pignite just because it wasn't fully evolved. It beat an Emboar and Heatmor solo after its partner lost. And it beat Croconaw and Azumarill with Fire Pledge. And this is on top of having more character development than most of Ash's Pokemon.
