I think the reason it sells more and why the hype exploded so much is because it's easily available and free. Almost everyone has a smartphone but not everyone has a Nintendo console, which most Pokémon games are exclusive to.

You can't use game sales alone for a franchise as large as Pokemon, Pokemon also saw a huge boom in merchandise sales in Gen 7
