Rowan and Oak are the biggest authorities there, I think.
Juniper, Elm and Sycamore are probably on the same tier. I can see sycamore more independent than the first two. Elm and Juniper are mostly under the shadow of Oak and her father, respectively.
I really don't know where Birch goes, though. He doesn't seem to be any important anywhere, but his field os research is pretty nice. I don't remember he doing any big accomplishment.
Kukui isn't even better than his fucking wife. Guzma mocks him and even Lusamine or Phaba are bigger authorities researching Pokémon in Alola than him. I believe the main professor in Alola was meant to be Mohn, but he went nuts.
