Despacito is a reflection of the sheer banality of our existence. It’s a word that has been heard and possibly understood by over half of the globe, but despite its vast reach, it still remains nothing more than a word. We see or hear despacito and immediately chemicals within our bodies are produced, evoking a certain reaction that matches those of our peers, whether that reaction is disgust, happiness, or indifference. Our species has reached a point where a singlecursedword can mean the same thing to billions, even if that meaning is the opposite of its intended one. We created it, too naive to understood what we had done, but it was too late. Unlike smallpox, despacito cannot be simply eradicated, even if humans tried. This is because the concept of despacito is far too intangible and omnipresent for one mind to comprehend. Our species will continue to repeat this word over and over again until we wipe ourselves out, taking with us the epitome of what it means to be human.
