DPPt really were pretty long. I thought maybe I just got older and the world at large didn't seem so big, but the routes were definitely more arduous. I like Unova for what it was, an urban region where you're more likely to see a fuckton of people and trainers than pokemon habitats.

This was not a world building consideration. Masuda confirmed in an interview that from unova on, the region map design was gimped because japanese children found sinnoh too confusing.

I miss it too. Hoenn and Sinnoh were the peak of Pokemon's world design imo.
DPPt have a lot of problems, to the point that I can't replay them, but the region wasn't one of them.
