I really don't think the level curve in Gen 2 is what makes it more challenging than later gens. It's actually pretty flat for most of the game with two annoying spikes (E4 and Red) where all surrounding areas give you nowhere to grind. I mean, I'm pretty sure Blue is the only Kanto Gym Leader who's actually tougher than the Elite Four you fought at the game's halfway point.

Half the pokemon are locked in Kanto or not available until late in Johto.

Fought every trainer (actively sought them out) and never used repels. Even did some grinding to keep the team members within 10ish levels of each other.

I always assumed the latter.

This was my Nuzlocke team (only lost a useless Togetic and shitbug supreme Ariados midgame) after Blue for example, in the 8th gym the team was around 33-37 levels.

The game is just easier. The level curve is very much a "rising tide raises all boats" type of thing. Sure you feel under leveled but so is literally everything else in the game. It's all relative.

Honestly, if you *just* got the 8th badge, you're fine. The path from Blackthorne to the E4 gives you a lot of experience, and the Pokemon in Victory Road are at least high level enough to get any stragglers up to 40.

Extremely easy, but with a spike at the E4. Kanto is the same way but ten times worse, with every Gym Leader but Blue being a joke for a team that got past the E4 and then Red suddenly jumping 20+ levels with absolutely no good grinding spots.

I agree, the game using level up movesets when the movepools in Gen 2 are extremely shallow is what makes it easier the most.

MVP at the league.
Stantler had a quite powerful HP Ghost apparently, I bet it was at least base 60 and Stomp / Headbutt and Hypnosis were insane.

I played HGSS recently and the muh level curve is real because wild pokemon and trainers are really low leveled so there's not point trying to go for a balanced team. Pic related, my team that defeated the elite 4.

I dumped Snivy's evolution at level 29 because I really didn't like her at all and my Boldore who was my main at level 38 because I realized you needed to trade to evolve him.
Had to use Reshiraham to beat Ghautist and only the crocodile, excadrill and bad aerodectyle were useful.

This is what I have so far. Carried a Phampy egg over like some other anon on here. Was gonna use Swinub as my starter since I enjoy pig Pokemon, but getting its evolution at 33 was going to be a chore because none of his base stats are higher than 50. Got the Mareep egg from Primo which was quite nice.
On the other hand, Phanpy doesn't learn any ground moves until late 20's. And its Magnitude.
Last 2 I have planned out to be Umbreon and Hitmonlee, giving me a nice type coverages with Dark/Psychic/Fighting plus Ground/Flying/Electric.

Nah, once I beated the E4 I started gathering the mons I wanted for my final team and there aren't a lot of places to grind levels fast.

Anyways it's not like the Kanto leaders are too hard if you go at them with their weaknesses. Destron fucked Sabrina hard and Gardevoir with three Calm Minds on it made short work of Surge.

It really doesn't considering the NPC habe bad movesets, and you also have badge boosts at your disposal so near the end, you basically deal 25% extra damage and take about 15% less damage than normal.

I know it's pretty generic, but i'm just speeding through the game, collecting data for said project. I'll ditch swellow for Rayquaza since it just helps me get through things even faster. When i get around to the remakes my team will be much less generic

Also, early game BW is fucking hell. No Pokemon variety, no easy way to gain levels, the gym leader suddenly has a lvl 14 ace when the highest level wild Pokemon in route 2 is 7, fucking Work Up spam. It's a miracle no one died.
