What does SMB do? Throw a Goomba at you right off the bat, at a location where if you jump over it you'll hit the block and realize you can get shit from them.
They've thrown away the proper teaching by trial and error for dragging you along by the ear, telling you what to do every step of the way.
While sometimes the games were ridiculous there was some absolutely fabulous level design back in the day, man.
Games are supposed to set you up to learn. and teach you, not push you forward kicking and screaming.
