If something doesn't have a lot of sales, then buying it sends a POSITIVE message to the devs, saying that there is an audience for the game. If it's a niche product with a modest budget it doesn't take a huge amount of people to make the game a success. This is why individual sales matter more with indieshit, lower budgets and less required sales to be successful.
Meanwhile, NOT buying a product that a lot of people ARE buying does not send any negative message to the devs, it sends no message at all. The only times NOT buying something can send a message is if so many people don't buy it that it ceases to be a success, like what happened with the recent Star Wars movie Solo, but /vp/ is such a small part of the populace that even if every person here told every friend they have
let's pretend the average /vp/ user has friends not to buy it and even if each friend told their friends not to buy it, it would not do anything because of all the other people who ARE buying it.
When it comes to voting with your wallet, there are no negative voices. Only a truly deafening silence can make devs respond, and if there are people screaming at the top of their lungs around you then you won't get noticed.
