>>35894569>1) Starters aren't forced to be used. You can get it, get some other mon, then box it permanently. Even Pikachu could be boxed, though he hated you for it.The option is there, sure, but how many of you have actually done this in gen 1, not counting a Nuzlocke challenge? Answer: fucking none of you, because there's not a single Pokemon you can catch before challenging Brock that can beat him. Rattata can't hit Brock's Mons for SE damage, and Pidgey, Butterfree and Beedrill die to Rock. Again, they had to retroactively add Mankey to give players a fair chance in Yellow.
>2) Players can learn what works through experience. They can say "huh, fire doesn't work against rock, maybe water or grass does". It's not a perfect solution but it at least respects the player's intelligence. There is a difference between respecting the player's intelligence and giving them the space to learn and experience things for themselves, versus failing to tell them fuck all and putting them in an unfair challenge. RBY only told you about a few type match ups. These were Fire-Water-Grass, and Ghost vs. Psychic, and that one didn't even fucking WORK in that generation because 1) the only Ghost type move was fucking Night Shade, and 2) they didn't program Ghost type to work properly, so Night Shade didn't do shit.
