Same. Gladion was basically every trait of every rival character from before, and Hau was like "lol kay".
And then Hau got his own little arc through the story, and he's actually much more competent putting together a team in USUM. Honestly, I think he's my favorite "rival".

I couldn't get through USUM because I'm worn out by how offensively easy the game is and already played SM. How did he change from SM?

Also, to me, USUM was definitely a step in the right direction in term of difficulty compared to SM. Not even meming with that Ultra Necrozma fight, most of the totem are well thought and summon allies that boost them or balance their weakness. Some trainer can put up a fight too, especially during the whole Rainbow Rocket part

Hau was the worst part of SM. Just an extra kick in the nuts that not only is my game being held up for another shitty cutscene, but it's only purpose is for hau to talk about inane shit.

Hau's team is mostly the same, but he switches out Komala for Tauros, and adds Noivern. When you battle him in Malie City after your first trip to Aether, he has five Pokemon instead of three, and they're EV trained. You battle him instead of Kukui for the Champion title battle, and in subsequent challenges, his Pokemon's levels range from 68-70, making him on par with Kukui's team and almost on par with Red, Blue and Giovanni.

I honestly enjoyed Gladion and Hau, probably my favorite characters in the whole series. I would like to see them in future titles, but knowing GF and their response to what fans want, we'll see Kanto pandering instead.

Hau sucks in SM and is worse in USUM. He's still the easiest battle every time you face him in the game, which makes him a lame as fuck Title Match battle at the end of USUM. Sweeping through him so fast and easily just made me groan. His personality and design are both irritating as hell, too. Hau is lame and the taste of his fans that aren't just typical girls with weird tastes in male characters confuse me.

I'd be slightly less bothered by him if he was a girl, though. Slightly.
