Yes there is a secret. Small trees which are part of the tilemap's meta-tiles are not headbuttable. Only small trees which are sprites. I think they are supposed to have slightly different background on them.

Note that which Pokemon a tree can produce is determined by area, though, the randomization just determines which trees in that area have which Pokemon.

There are common trees and rare trees, you can find out through some weird math thing on the internet that involves blocks on the screen and your trainer card number.

or you can run around fucking up every tree multiple times. Heracross appears 30% of the time on a rare tree, move along after like 10 battles
