In my case, while Mew was a nightmare to get in the 20th anniversary distribution (at least, it was one in my country) and it's another one just to make it transferable to PokéBank through VC; this game is likely not going to have any connection to the main series, and it probably won't be possible to transfer pokémon from there to Gen 8; so I doubt your friend will miss much if they don't buy it.
