XY and SUM sold more despite much smaller install base (DS has twice the units as 3DS)

also gen 5 also flopped in terms of influence gen 5 has the most literally who mons and trainers/gym leaders

Because extremely casual gamers make up a huge portion of sales for Pokemon and at that point a lot of them already had a Pokemon game for the DS. Look at the sales for the whole series, the first pair out on each handheld did better than the others on that handheld.

When these came out there was that commercial that interviewed a ceb quoting its "complex and engrossing story" while this was never the appeal of GF's Pokemon games. I don't have any link to it but I remember it vividly.

Yeah you get so much more variety in the possible teams you can use when you limit yourself to 150 pokemon, excluding version specifics, legendaries, and total shitmons

Definitly inspires me to think long and hard about my many options that I'll have to build a team with

Problem with a lot of the new pokemon wasn't bad designs (since that's more subjective). The problem was so many of them being an obvious stand-in for some gen 1 pokemon that Gamefreak obviously wanted to use but couldn't due to their stipulation.

So instead of living sludge, we get living garbage, and nobody is happy.

These games were great, but I can see them having one major thing off with them. That being the absolute lack of anything related to Kanto and general hate from people who weren't fans of a game having nothing but completely new Pokemon. These games also didn't add anything truly revolutionary in terms of mechanics, and didn't have the stupid amounts of hype XY and SM had. Megas and Alolan Forms brought the Kanto-lovers back too. By all means, the games were great, but there were just some things it didn't have going for it.

BW1 sold less than comparable games (RS, DP, XY, SM - the main game of their generation). It therefore flopped.

BW2 sold more than comparable games (E, Pt, USUM - the third version of their generation). This strong showing saved the generation as a whole, despite the disappointing sales of BW1.

DP only sold 2 million more.

156 brand new Pokemon with not a single Kanto (or any other region) Pokemon available until either the postgame or Dream World. At least in the first two. BW2 are a different story, and I honestly didn't like them as much in this regard.

It's a dip in sales. It prompted Gamefreak to change a lot in Pokemon, leading to the casualization we now have. Sales then recovered to pre-BW levels.

If your game sells less than all comparable games, it flopped. The gimmick didn't work.
