I was one of the few britfag kids who was aware of Pokemon coming before Pokemania hit the masses, I saw ads in American comic books and knew at age 7 that this was gonna be something special. I've been with the series from the very beginning and it is my honest opinion that BW was one of the most exciting entries to date. Sure it has it's flaws, all entries do, but the subtle blend of a refreshing new world mixed with humorous nostalgia pandering and nods to the original games made BW a truly magical release. Couldn't believe the shit I was seeing when /vp/ began whining and crying over this.

It truly is the haters fault.

That's the problem. A bunch of the new pokemon were just taking up the spots that old Kanto trashmons usually filled. Instead of geodude and zubat, we got a new bat and and a new rock type with a trade evolution. Because Gamefreak can't design a region without something in that spot, apparently.

That's why the new pokemon get shit on so much. Half of them are just filling space because they didn't want to use anything from old games. Not even their mascot.

Because it's intentionally creating designs just to fill space. People who want cool new designs won't be happy because they're all obviously just copycats of old designs. People who like old mons won't give those as much of a chance because they'll immediately compare it to an old design they like more. And of course it just makes people question why they bothered to commit to an,entirely new 150 because they could have handled it.

And of course, there's the fact that 150 mons is a fairly low number for a regional dex in terms of variety. Rather than creating artificial limitations, they should have focused on making a large pool of good designs, and then put in a handful of older mons in order to help fill in the gaps that they didn't want to make an entirely new pokemon for.

Saying 'we're only going to use new pokemon is an artificial limitation. It's a limitation that they only created for themselves, rather than a factor of hardware or anything else.

And yes, 150 is a low number for a regional dex. It's a lot of new pokemon, sure, but Hoenn made nearly as many but also put a good deal of older pokemon into the region in order to fill those spots they didn't have a new pokemon for.

They designed off of a checklist, and it feels like a checklist.

It crippled teambuilding. There just weren't enough options to make a team you want, instead you were pushed towards a handful of viable options, with no alternatives. If you didn't like the dedicated mon for a role, you couldn't go back to an older one you like, you now have to use that mon you don't like.

And let's be real, there were some very questionable design decisions there, while others were clear "we're making a new mon except it's really the old one" mons.

This wasn't helped by the very high encounter rate, which often only served to show the low variety in mons in areas, particulary in the first half of the game, which is important for making an impression on the player.

Which, ironically, is exactly the problem with FRLG and LGPE. Limited to 150 is limiting regardless if they’re the 150 from Kanto or the 150 from Unova.

BW and FRLG both have issues with crippled team building, which is why BW2 added more variet and LGPE... removed a pokemon though, it is a mythical, unavailable, other than event (except pay 40$ today to get it at the start!).

Anyways: What I mean is that you need to build a team that can handle any situation. You need a check for any kind of opponent. That further limits your options, there's about three different teams in that region altogether.

The main game is the meat of the game for those of us not autistic enough for competitive. If the main game is disappointing, then the postgame can't save it.

Just looking it over, it feels like stuff like Mandibuzz, Heatmor, Durant, and Hydreigon are out, since they show up way to late, and either evolve too late or aren't very good. Meinfoo also suffers from that to a degree. Accelgor and Escavalier aren't very viable for an in-game run, since getting a normal trade evolution is hard enough without the other person needing something specific.

I also noticed Unfeazent is listed twice, so that already brings us from 65 down to 57

As far as things that are only viable in the very early game go, Watchog, Swoobat, andLeavanny, are the major standouts. Basculin, Audino, Stunfisk, and Maractus might also have a hard time due to being single stage.

And of course, there's the fact that you can't get Zoroark unless you have a Celebi, so it's not an actual option.

So that's 49 major options, which is about what I'd expect from a dex with so many three stage evolutions.

Leavanny is totally viable the whole game, I used it on my first run. Unfezant is about as viable as FRLG Pidgeot, so shitty but just barely usable. And you need a flier anyways. Watchog is pretty shit.

Yeah, I was just correcting the total to not count it twice, not actually removing it. It has decent stats and is one of the few flying types you can actually get, so it's fairly viable.
