500 bst means nothing with bad distribution. Give it 130/55/85/90/85/50 is fine.
Same goes for Medicham and Diggersby.

Those three moves in particular are only learned by legendary or mythical Pokemon. And in Spacial Rend's case, it's only learned by Darkrai and Arceus through events.

Actually, maybe Shedinja with a 500 BST might be scary, even if it only put those increases into both defenses in Metas where Subs are Passable (Since the Sub uses the HP of the one that set it up and the Defense of the current Pokemon using it)

You're not seeing the bigger picture. Pokemon aren't just a BST, but a result of stats, moves AND ABILITY. I cannot stress this enough. Fully evolved pokemon with 400 are fine as long as they get something that patches it up: butterflies get quiver dance, azumarill gets huge power, wobbuffet gets shadow tag, sableye gets prankster, etc. Stuff like ledian and delibird don't need a mega buff to their BST, just a redistribution of stats and access to the right moves and abilities: prankster ledian with quiver dance or snow warning delibird with aurora veil, for example. You still would never use them over volcarona or a-ninetales, but they wouldn't be completely worthless and just poor man's versions of the gimmick instead.

I agree that there should be "base moves" that every pokemon of a type should learn: every psychic type should learn psychic, every electric type should learn confusion. But EVERY move is stupid. Do you have any idea what landorus would do with brave bird? what golurk would do with fissure? what kartana would do with power whip, iron tail and a wide lens? pheromosa with tail glow? you're thinking of fixing crabominable by letting it have mach punch and ice shard but you're forgetting there are big and scary guys out there that would just become bigger and scarier.

I think mons ought to be unique, not viable. I would throw in signature abilities/moves but I don't think this should become that kind of thread.

Anyways, what makes you think that giving them a base BST of 500 won't end up exactly the same regarding viability? it is impossible to balance all 807 current pokemon to a similar degree of viability and still having them all relatively unique.

That's the opposite of fixing it, you've introduced a ton of new threats to the meta without more ways to play around them all. There may be more viable Pokemon, but you've also created more Team Preview wins.

The actual solution is to give players more ways to prepare for and play around all the new threats, making games more about individual skill.

Well if it's about individual skill, then the entire system would have to be overhauled from the ground up. Because the fundamental way the game is designed means that there are only a few Pokemon that are truly viable, and therefore you find hundreds of teams all running the same Pokemon. If there are 800 possible monsters to choose from, but only 10 of them are worth using, there's a problem.

Honestly the problem is the lack of frequent buffs and nerfs. We are getting those every time a new game/generation comes up, insane. Im not saying that they should update the game every week or so, because balancing 800 pokemon is mindblowing, but maybe every few months or so, just to give more excitement to the meta

The game just needs to rebalanced so hyper offense isn't as viable, and stall isn't as annoying once its gone. Drop damage and healing across the board and you have less pokemon that will die in one hit from a fast sweeper and will actually be able to achieve something.

I do agree though, there would need to be a huge overhaul to both make more mons viable and fix competitive play. I just don't know what that would entail. "Just have less mons" might work for oldgens, but obviously that doesn't make anyone happy going forward.

Since some Megas have below 600 BST, all of them will now have at least 600 BSTs with their regular forms being better.
Mawile and Mega Mawile get a +120 increase to both their BSTs and there is no distribution to not make that scary as fuck. Even dumping it mostly into Special Attack would still be useful to make Mega Mawile a mixed attacker that threatens checks like Skarmory and Celesteela even harder with Flamethrower.
There is also Beedrill/Mega Beedrill which gets +105 BST increase or Pidgeot getting +21 BST.
There are also other scary Pokemon after the minimum increase with like Crawdaunt, Linoone, the Unaware users and Simple users, Swellow, Chatot, and of course Smeargle.
People really need to learn that BST isn't the biggest deciding factor for what Mons are viable or not. This sould be evident with Clefable being top tier despite not having a single stat above 100 and Slaking/Regigigas being PU despite having multiple stats above 100.

You know what would make competitive actually good? Competitive, revamped Contests full of alternate stats and abilities separated from battling. That way, you can have Pokemon that are completely and utterly shit in battle be good elsewhere.
Of course, it ultimately fixes nothing about competitive battling, but you know damn well all you want is for some shitmon favourites to not be competely useless. Not that your idea would help that.
