Daily reminder that Sakurai cares more about Pokemon than the Pokemon Company does and the simple fact that Leaf exists as a costume for Pokemon Trainer in Smash proves it.

Modern children don't like to spend too much time on one thing, they need to be able to finish a match quickly so they can jump right into a new one. For this reason, we didn't think adding Stock matches was worth it, really - the kids just want to smash around for 2 minutes at a time.

This basically. He'd remove features then say it's to make this Smash game unique. Sakurai takes things out to fit his vision of what Smash should be, Masuda takes things out because he's incompetent and is willing to let a lackluster product release and blame it on the phone generation.
