It's literally impossible for Pokemon to be challenging in a meaningful way. The only possible challenge a turn-based game with as few options as Pokemon can have is throwing ridiculously over-leveled opponents your way.

Turning exp share off makes all your pokemon lose tons of EVs, and makes them all very underleveled. It legitimately adds a lot of numerical difficulty that takes some skill to overcome.

Unless you just grind for it anyways like a moron.

Neo-Exp. Share is more akin to Yoshi's Woolly World's Mellow Mode or Fire Emblem Fates' Phoenix mode, where you have an in-game toggle for basically turning off any and all effort.

Mind you the point still stands that it's an "option" that's "optional" so you have the "option" to turn it off and forget it existed forever and shut up about it.

The counter-argument in that case would be to just to get into battles with trainers, and add a growing list of self-imposed challenges.

The entire exercise is a "us vs them!" dickwaving contest that gets nowhere and will never get resolved, and that was put to bed by making a toggle for EXP. share.

You have six pokemon with four moves each with all of them having different type match ups, utility, buffs/debuffs, etc. Pokemon has plenty of options, the game just doesn't push back hard enough to require any strategy other than "use something with a STAB super effective move to run a train on this gym leader"

If you can't beat a gym leader it's not because the game is hard, your chance at winning is just lower because your level is bot high enough. To combat that you'll grind wild pokemon to increase your level and thus your chance at winning though this does not increase your skill.

It's like saying winning the lottery is hard.

If pokemon actually have any difficulty it would need something like the timed button inputs in paper mario where you have some timing.
