The Tapus are based on Polynesian idols that you would probably know by the name of totems but they weren't really totems. They were never based on people or based on something that is based on people. They're a part of a culture and are fine.
This difference should be clear. Neither is based on people, but one is based on how a culture represents themselves and the other is based on how a separate culture represented a culture.
