They wanted to make its stats and national dex number to match a number related to the archaeopteryx or something, but that number was too high for a mere fossil so they gave it a shit ability to "balance" it out.

In theory, Defeatist should hinder Archeops a lot.

In practice, Archeops is usually dead before it ever takes effect.

So it seems like any mon in that 550 range has some connotations to legendaries. Volcarona has its own legend and dungeon, AZ Floette is immortal and Florges is super long lived with ties to Kalosian royalty, and Arcanine is the "legendary" Pokemon and has its own myths associated with it.

I hope we see more "kind of legendary" mons in the 550 stat range in the future. It's neat; makes them feel special in a different way to pseudos.

Not even as Darmanitan has similar stat spread and gets Sheer Force so it's Flare Blitz is a nuke.
Archeops should have at least has a BST of 620 if they wanted to dick it over this badly.

Arcanine days are delusional. Their shitmon isn't good in UU and isn't good in VGC anymore, but instead of letting it drop to a tier where it will actually be useful, they keep it in UU where better mons use it as a punching bag.

You'd think they'd retcon these shit abilities after blatantly introducing Power Creep with Mega Evos and Z-Moves. They don't even have to replace them entirely. Just let Slaking, Archeops, and Golisopod have different abilities in the Ability 2 and Hidden Ability slots.

Because they went extinct. The dinosaur it's based on died along with its entire evolutionary line. There are no animals that come from it because they all died and their ability to fly was very bad (the Poké Dex even states that Archeops is better running than flying.)
Fossil Pokémon are doomed to be shit either intentionally or unintentionally. Maybe some day we'll get complete Fossil Pokémon without the rock typing and a stat boost. Maybe that day I'll be able to use my bro, Armaldo, in competitive.

Mega Aerodactyl is just on the wrong side of a delicate balancing act. If it got Head Smash and/or Brave Bird it'd be a major force in OU and potentially even banned to Ubers. Not having a big-ticket STAB is what's holding the thing back, everything else about it is ready for prime time.
