Literally the same thing as Z-Moves except you can't choose when to activate them and they don't work on status moves

it was a thing in OU too. If you only needed one big hit to take out a particular threat then it was always better to use a Gem instead of a Choice Item or Life Orb.

Really the Flying Gem is probably the only important one to have for that reason. Z moves work better for most other types, and that's the only niche instance where continuing to hold a Z crystal would be bad.

Zcrystals already don’t trigger knock off’s damage boost... they should just make the game check for use and then let them trigger acrobatics after they’ve been used.

Not likely. These Gems were spammed a bit too much back when they were introduced in Gen 5 due to how OP they were. Besides, Z-Crystals and Z-Moves pretty much take their place currently and are also more balanced than the Type Gems to boot.
