>>35947739>I don't understand shadersYeah so, no. Not at all actually. You can make things not only receive light much differently, but make them receive different lights entirely from each other. Nothing forces Pokemon to look ugly other than laziness.
The main problem with older gen pokemon "sprites", as you Pokemon fans call them, is not even the models, but the pale, faded-looking texture work. For whatever reason they purposely made many mons look desaturated as hell and the shading style doesn't help that.
