Best Pokémon game for a return to the series?

Hi there.

If I wanted to return to this series (haven't played since RBY...), which one would be the best game for me to play?

Modified ROMs are OK.

I'm somewhat interested in multiplayer, but singleplayer focused games/ROMs are fine too.

Honestly, gen 2. You can get your nostalgia fit and enjoy one of the best games in the series. Then after that, just go to gen 3 and so on, dropping them where you see fit

You should wait for the release of Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee. They are slated to be the definitive pokemon experience

If you havent played since RBY- you should go to RSE... They have the introduction of the ability system which has made Pokemon different from Gen 1 or 2. Emerald general being the most comprehensive version.

If you dont like the Pokemon in RSE- move to DS generation and play HGSS.

Heartgold or Soulsilver would be a good start. It's still got a lot of Kanto mons but is one of the best remakes.

The gen 3 games would alsp be good, though if you can't find a copy of the GBA games and don't want to mess eith an emulator, the remakes are fine.

Black 2 or White 2 are bettrr games than Black/White, but you may be a bit lost on the story.

Easy. Heart Gold or Soul Silver. You should also do a quick replay of red/blue before hand. With an emulator it will be extremely quick as you can speed up while grinding battle experience. Techinically Black/White and their sequel are the most extensive new additions to the series aside from HGSS so play those too.

I would go for the generational order. If you really want to play Kanto again while not minding GBA quality, go with FireRed/LeafGreen(it also has some content not present in RBY), otherwise skip it and go for HeartGold/SoulSilver.

I'd recommend a QoL romhack from FRLG for familiarity, given that you had played RBY only. Maybe Pokémon Throwback, it's a FireRed hack that incorporates infinite TMs and allows trade evos in game, but HMs are still unforgettable and it doesn't have the phys/spec split. If somebody knows of a FRLG hack with the split and updated movepools + fairy type pls respond.

Kanto Throwback (fire red rom hack) is pretty good to get introduced to new features that the 3DS games have. Includes things like reusable TM's, no overworld poison damage, Physical Special Split.
