To me Charizard has never looked more badass. He looks bulky and heavy, and the way Sugimori framed him as looming over the camera carries so much more power than the stock shot of him viewed dead on standing ramrod straight. Is the drawing a little off-model compared to later ones? Yeah, but that's what I like about it. I like it when the art is a little funky and doesn't feel so factory polished.
When Sugimori redrew the Kanto species for FRLG it's like the raw energy was sucked out.
