There's a pretty big chance it was going to end the series, though. Isn't it basically the only movie in the franchise to have DIRECT continuity with the anime?

Also there's no reason to age the characters up in a show like that unless you're ending it.

I may be missing a few, but Ash/Serena has over 3x this, and also a fuck ton of promotion. Regardless though, he probably won't get with either of them.

Exactly my point. They never intended for Pokeshipping to go anywhere. If they wanted ash and misty to be canon, they would have given it a satisfactory ending. But no, it was dropped without a conclusion. Serena on the other hand, was intended to be ash's endgame since the beginning. If not, they wouldn't have made her kiss him on the lips. That kiss is supposed to be a hint that they are gonna be a couple in the future.

Yeah, because none of those are created to promote the games. Romance was never a big part of the anime. Before Serena was introduced, the concept of a main girl crushing on ash was considered fanfiction. Nobody expected that we might actually get a girl with a canon crush. Even after she was introduced, nobody expected amour to get a conclusion. People thought that it might be dropped just like Pokeshipping. But no, she actually confessed her feelings! There's a reason why she's considered as the endgame. That's because serena has managed to accomplish something none of the girls ever could. She confessed her feelings. So next time you try to undermine its significance, just think about the show's history with romance.

Doesn't the japanese movie start with the girl dying and then the scientist tries to clone her and it goes wrong or something and that's why mewtwo is angry?

I assume this is a precursor to that. Obviously that whole start part was cut from the western release because kids aren't expected to deal with adult concepts over here.

You're kinda right. That comment was made by James during that arc that another group of Rockets planned to kidnap the baby Lugia, Silver. It was in the dub though, but that's the only time I believe the series ever acknowledges events from the movies aside from Mewtwo's cameos.
