I haven't played Pokemon since X and Y, but I was looking at the Gen 7 Pokemon recently.

Is it common opinion that the pokemon designs in Gen 7 went downhill?

No. There are probably more controversial designs in Gen 7 than Gen 6, but overall I've seen more positive reception to this gen than 3, 5, and 6.

All generations have good and bad designs. Imo gen 5 has the largest amount of bad designs but that's probably because it has so many Pokemon. Followed by gen 4. It's all subjective really.

Gen VII's main problem with Pokemon is that most of them are slow as all shit and/or shitting away in NU and PU. Crabominable is an example of such.
Design-wise, many of them are well-liked. Crabominable is not an example of such.

lol yes there are definitely some controversial ones. Just look at pic-related as an example and it's likely that someone will say that they don't like its design due to it being edgy or that it's a Sonic OC (shares a similar color scheme with Light Gaia (AKA Chip).

Before you ask, I like it (one of my favorites even) but it's a real damn shame that Game Freak just had to fuck it over with Counter and that shit stats spread. A shillmon should never have to be shit (and this applies to midday and dusk as well even though they're better competitively but they still need improvements as well)

Gen 5 is widely considered the rock bottom when it comes to designs
I personally thought this gen was a mixed bag, we got some really good stuff like Golisopod but also got shitbags like Crabominable

Remove Pokemon that are not well-liked, piss off people that happen to have them as their favorites.
OR:
Keep all 800+ Pokemon including the ones people complained about to avoid pissing people off.

A damned if you do / damned if you don't type of situation really, but keeping all 800 Pokemon (and counting) is the better thing to do to avoid having angry (former) fans because that means less money and a PR disaster.

I'm sick of seeing this shit defending terrible designs. Stunfisk is a good intentionally ugly design. Even Muk is a good intentionally ugly design. Shit like Crabominable and Garbodor are not. They're eyesores. Fucking hell look at this lumpy mess.

There’s a few highlights I like from it, being salazzle, crabominable, lycanroc, turtonator, vikavolt and decidueye for me. The rest aren’t necessarily bad to me they just don’t stand out. It’s hard to throw the UBS in there because they’re supposed to not seem normal so it’s harder to say, but I think every other Pokémon in it should follow regular opinions

Personally I think it's mostly an improvement over 6's designs. Dunno what it is but the "even" gens seem to just not grab me with their designs as much.

fpbp, but only the final forms
Rowlet is a solid first evo and both Torracat and Brionne aren't too bad
UBs are great though, probably my favorite designs in many years.
Outside of that, Golisopod is a real standout in design, very good.
