Is Kanto small in GSC? Or was it this small in gen1 and I dont remember? Only like an hour in and already knocked out elec/grass/psychic gyms/power plant

In Gen II? Absolutely, without all the sidequests that were there in Gen I it's especially small, also Mt. Moon and Rock Tunnel were simplified, Silph is just one floor, Cerulean Cave and the Seafoam Island cave were removed and the ruins of Cinnabar Island don't help either. Oh yeah, and Viridian Forest got shafted too, but it's still very impressive that they managed to fit in what they could given how inept Game Freak are at coding (they needed Iwata to save them).
Gen IV did a very good job at restoring some of the size of Kanto, shame they didn't fully restore Mt. Moon but it's nice having Viridian Forest, Cerulean Cave etc. back

Yeah, it's smaller as they wanted to fit it in on the same cart as GS and there were some issues with the code (as it was based heavily off Gen I's code) so they had to cut some stuff out (Seafoam, Cinnibar and Safari zone all got nuked/nerfed as GF couldn't kill the missingno/glitch city glitches so removed them altogether).

I disagree about Viridian. They could have put everything back except that. I thought Gen 2 Kanto was supposed to show some of the negative sides of progress (pollution w/ Grimer in Celadon, deforestation, etc.)

People think GSC only cut out a few areas, but the entirety of Kanto was shrunk down by about 33%.

Looks like most of that would be the cut dungeons, there are a few snips I can recognize from memory but not a bunch.

Yeah, I just checked on the RBY maps, you can clearly see it shrunk down, especially in places like the bike path and all the water that connects seafoam to the rest of the world, veridian forest is out in the world and much smaller, its noticeably smaller, even without the dungeons

It is smaller, but you can't notice it a first sight.
