Why did they decide to have Ash catch a Kingler –of all Pokémon- in the anime?
They mainly gave Ash the popular/easily recognizable/power fantasy Pokémon like Pikachu, the 3 starters, the early route bird and bug Poké, Lapras and Snorlax…
And then there’s Kingler, probably one of the most forgotten gen 1 mons.
What did they mean by this?

Literally a box mon who evolved in the 1 battle he was in
Ash forgot he had it til he got the league
Krabbys episode was about the PC system and dragonite more than krabby its self.

They were at a beach, so they probably had to think about what water Pokemon Ash could get that Misty wouldn't have dibs on or wouldn't be reserved for gags like Magikarp or Slowpoke.
