Just finished playing through Platinum. I haven't played a gen 4 game since the year they came out. I didn't like them so I never went back until now. Why do people love this game so much? It's the most hand holdy gen in the series. The monsters are crap. The distortion world is annoying. You can't walk 3 steps into a route without another trainer battle. I get everyone has their own opinions, so I legitimately want you guys to defend this game.

I've played all of them many times except 4 and 7. To be fair, I had forgotten how garbage Sun and Moon were for like the first half. And I'm not talking about how linear the games are. I felt like in Platinum every time I walked out of a building a character was like, "Hey! Follow me!" when that cut scene was over the character then tells you exactly what to do next and which city to go to.

I didn't even try to play USUM. I played through Sun once. I enjoyed some of the changes but it was super short and super linear. I saw how hated USUM were and decided not to get them. My room mate got UM and he said he had to stop playing like 1/4 into the game.

But it was as much of a hard "No" as previous gens. You could go down the next route after hitting a new town maybe halfway or more most of the time before you hit a spot where you realize you need a new item. This game wouldn't let you leave the towns until you beat the gym or fought Galactic.

All the story elements are easy to just click right through though. The game will point you in a direction but once you're on a route or in a gym it's just you and the game. Not nearly as frequent or lengthy as Gen 5, 7, or even 6's interruptions.

Yes that is an element people like about the game. There are plenty of trainers ready to fuck up a party member or two so keep those potions and some revives on hand to avoid running back to the Pokemon Center.

The main campaign bore me when the game first came out. I played the fuck out of Diamond (yes, I know. but I had PBR and friends to go with it. YES, I know, I know) and most everything was a carbon copy except for the last last last chunk of the game with distortion world. BUT HOLY FUCK. The battle frontier was fun. Decent challenge. Mixed up the pace of regular battles. I miss it. Felt like a reward for veteran players.

Your criticisms that aren't purely subjective don't really make sense to me, Platinum isn't very handholdy, and I don't understand how there being a surplus of trainers would ever be a bad thing. It makes me wonder if your problem with Platinum was the speed of the engine, rather than the actual content, which would be understandable. But I might be wrong about that.

This is simply false. It's even easy to get lost, because there's so much backtracking involved and you're not told enough. Plus you'll probably have to grind to beat the E4 or at least plan your team with some care.

i wouldn't consider those true content, since they're things that are in most of the game and are too shallow or not interesting enough as to be fun for too long

Maybe not compared to the shitshow of Gen 6 and 7 routes. But Platinum (and B2W2 for that matter) had a wide variety of available pokemon without having far too many pokemon on any one route. The only real lack, compared to other gens, was fire types

There's also quite a bit of exploring to be done and lots of hidden paths to follow, which I thought was really fun. I even liked the cross-gen evolutions, since they gave a lot of otherwise completely forgettable Pokemon a second lease on life. Not all were good, but the good outweighed the bad in my eyes.

While some of this may be true in B2W2, I believe this game has some of the best mon distribution on the games. For example, you can find Sandile in the desertic areas, you can find Sewaddle in forests, etc.

It is if you don't want to spam repel because the pokemon in the area are pokemon that you've been seeing a lot

I'm playing through it again too, right at the second gym now. Yes it does have the standard "first do this before advancing" but I have not experienced the same amount of handholding Kalos and Alola gave me. For one, only Cut stopped me from going back to explore the Old Chateau and getting Rotom, not a damn dog smelling the street forever.
I personally like it a lot because of how the story goes, the region is cool. Also the whole gen splitting Special and Physical, and that's pretty much it.

Not true and infact, the lack of clear guidance makes it easy to get lost in Sinnoh. For example, you aren't told where to go next after you beat Team Galactic at their HQ in Veilstone City so it can get confusing. From the beginning of the game to around Hearthome City, there's only around 3 tutorials. The obligatory pokemart and pokecenter introduction, the gym guide in oreburgh and the underground man in eterna.

Given the amount of time dedicated to your rivals and N, I'd disagree. Though I'll admit I'm not dedicated enough to prove it mathematically. Platinum's lengthiest cutscenes are the wall of text before the bombs go off and the tail end of the Mt Coronet segment. There seems to be a lot less fanfare to the story elements than anything in Gen 5 that serves to pad the length of its story. For better or worse depending on your preference.

I don't recall needing to learn about Barry's dad disapproving of his Pokemon journey. Nor do I recall any of the Sinnoh gym leaders trying to pontificate to me about the meaning of right and wrong.

Anyone with taste knows Emerald is the best with HGSS a little behind.

Go outside of 4chan and you'll find plenty of people rightfully bashing B2W2 for Pokestar studios and the massive amounts of roadblocks that prohibit you from exploring a large portion of the region until the postgame.

Honestly, the only reason people on here say they like Gen 5 is either because they're contrarians or because they have a thing for Hilda and Rosa
