Even with its flaws, it deserves the praise that it gets, because it introduced a lot of good features that still get used, as well as great designs for most sprites. A huge improvement on the messy sprites of Gen 1 (especially back sprites).

The thing about stones isn't a big deal though desu. I've beaten the Elite 4 pre-Kanto with Poliwrath, Arcanine, Jolteon, and Victreebell in different playthroughs, the evolutionary stones aren't really hard to get once you have the NPCs phone numbers. They always call me during regular story play about the stone I need.
