route 1 is pidgey and rattatta
route 2 is caterpie, weedle, pidgey, rattatta, nidorans
route 22 is spearow, mankey, rattatta, nidorans
viridian forest is pidgey line, weedle line, metapod line, pikachu
and route 3, which you can't even reach because the kid insists you fight the gym, has pidgey, rattatta, spearow, sandshrew, jigglypuff, mankey
mankey lets you beat brock, but it doesn't let you get in.
If you could make it to the mount moon pokemart you could buy the magikarp, but again stupid "challenge the gym" guy is in the way.
The only lesson here is "don't choose charmander or your stuck at gym 1."
