I gotta say I expected USUM to be bad but there's a clear metaphor in the game, it's not just about Junichi Masuda. The whole game is about his troubles with women, he's dealt so much with women who display love but don't really mean it and all his life has just wanted to enjoy the "American dream" (Alola is based on Hawaii), living life with a bunch of friends and a beautiful wife... This whole game is basically a conglomeration of all the unrealistic expectations of life out there, Masuda has always been confused about women and relationships and this game is basically one big dream. He starts out in his fantasy, with all his friends and the wife of his dreams but then it falls apart because he is just too socially anxious to ever achieve this kind of life, hence the name of one of the game "Pokemon Moon," representing the moon that he's just staring at alone, with only his imaginations (Symbolized by the sun) to keep him company.
