Because forced gyro controls and lobbing balls at the Pokemon until its captured is a lot less fun than battling the Pokemon, weakening it, and then capturing it with the feel of accomplishment

Wild battles may require a tiny bit more of thinking before you get false swipe or a pokemon that can reliably paralyze or put the wild pokemon to sleep. You can't go all out because you might make it faint. Other than that, there isn't that much difference, honestly.

What is Grinding? What is no safe pathway?
The mechanics of battle-based XP mean that in a game not brokenly easy random encounters are required and thus non-optional. Additionally you don't have Cut for a while to cut down the tall grass in places that are unavoidable and Repel costs money you could be spending on Potions and Pokeballs, punishing the 'avoid RE' playthrough

I always thought it would be cool if after you caught a weakened pokemon it would give you xp based on the percentage of health they had left. Like if they had 10% health left you would get 90% of the xp.
