breeding as a mechanic is poorly-implemented enough, making every pokemon able to conceive viable young with anything in their egg group that has special snowflake 50-50 physiology would probably be the only way they could make it worse.

Species breeding doesn't apply to pokemon though, as egg groups are a thing making it so pokemon that look nothing alike can breed. Example: Humanoid Gardevoir and a literal ghost tree Trevanant.

Pretty much this. At most, you could make it so color could be influenced by the male parent for a certain degree of 'crossbreeding'

So, for example, if you have a pokemon that's normally red, and some of the color variants are more orange, then breeding it with something orange is more likely to give you an orange variant. But at the same time, you could also just catch an orange one normally, it'd just be more rare.

That's the most I'd want to see with any sort of crossbreeding mechanic.

i mean, they wouldn't have to design each one individually. i played a game from the early 2000s where you could crossbreed dinosaurs, and it would automatically generate an intermediate of their body shapes and a mix of their features, millions of possible combinations. it wouldn't be impossible for pokemon models to be automatically reskinned and have key features like horns or gems or manes placed in set spots if such an old game could manage it.

Works fine for monster rancher. And even has precedence in the series, just in legends but still. Honestly, whether it's shit or not, I can't see them not trying out pokemon hybridisation as a generational gimmick some time. It's no bigger a ridiculous shark jump than mega evolutions.

mega evolution is actually good. not perfect, but definitely not a negative addition to the franchise. it's just attached to a bad game that did basically fuck all with the mechanic in its narrative to make it feel like a part of the world. the problem is that every game after XY has been worse than it, despite peoples' attempts to paint XY as an anomaly

I know what you mean, but think a bit, every pokemom (currently) is being created with a global marketing goal, trying to catch as many public as possible, that's why their designs go through a strict market study (this is the reason for its simplicity) if they were to create each special snowflake that each fan have in mind, they could never mass-produce the merchandise due to the enormous variety, basically it is keep it simple and sell it to the whole world

I guess the equivalent in scale would be if a few handfuls of species could create hybrids. If not naturally it'd fit for the same sort of labs that revive fossils, and make things like mewtwo and genesect.

Alolan forms are done, they'll move on to a new gimmick just like how there weren't any new megas in gen 7. It's a shame though, kantonian forms of alolan mon would be cool to see, and it'd make sense to since we've never seen those pokemon in that area but I guess gen 1 pandering is more important.

At this point its way too late. We have 800 pokemon they would have to make crossbreed designs for. If each pokemon got just two crossbreed designs then thats 1600 new designs they have to come up with when usually its like 120 to 130 new pokemon designs each gen (at the very best)

Its been 20 years and we have half that many, this will sadly almost assuredly never happen in this timeline

Never. That's too many Pokemon and models to make.
The only way I can see it happening is with a new pokemon that can breed with 2-3 other pokemon to create a completely diffferent Pokemon, taking on traits of both parents and their types.

Like some people have said, they wouldn’t necessarily have to create a mix of every possible combination. They could make a select few cross breeds, that are basically new Pokemon, maybe like 40ish. The Pokémon that could breed would have to be similar (e.g. Rapidash and Zebstrika) and would result in a hybrid (e.g. Fire/Electric Type horse), that would have an amalgamation of movepools, stats, etc. Maybe have them be bred by a specific ‘Crossbreeder’ to solve the whole ‘why couldn’t they do this in the past?’ question.
