It was a pokemon introduced for rarity's sake so completing the pokedex would be harder, hence the "sparse" reference in its name. They did the same thing next generation with Chimecho.

Also, Dunsparce has been buffed, just not enough. Serene Grace made it much more usable with its movepool, which has grown by leaps and bounds. It has Rollout before Chespin does and fucks up Viola's entire gym as a result. That's why they put it on such an early route.

Also Serene Grace is, like, the "get meme'd on" ability unless we're including stuff like Moody. The hell do you mean?

Dunsparce is also really slow though. I used it in a run of Johto and didn't even bother with headbutt since everything and its mother learns headbutt. It pretty much was just a bulky wall with rock smash, dig, and roost

Serene Grace is not an argument in favor of Dunsparce because so many better Pokemon have this ability.

Serene Grace was perfect for Dunsparce as its varied move pool includes a lot of interesting moves with additional effects. This would have been Dunsparce's niche, unique in itself but not so weak that it is a gimmick. Dunsparce would have been perfectly fine here.

However, Serene Grace is an ability that is given to 13 Pokemon. Dunsparce would have been much better off if this was a unique ability or at least not attached to much stronger Pokemon including Jirachi and the Togepi line.

I don't get why it's Normal type. There are so many typings that could work for it. Dragon. Ground. Fairy. My personal preference is monotype Dragon but really any combination of these would be better than Normal.

Even if serene grace was exclusive to dunsparce, dunsparce still wouldn't be that great. Dunsparce plays a bit differently from Jirachi and Togekiss because it's more of a wall, which the two pokemon you mentioned are offensively oriented. The only other defensive line with serene grace is Chansey, and they all use natural cure of serene grace.

Serene Grace is wasted on Dunsparce because of its abysmal speed. Too many of the moves that take advantage of Serene Grace are for flinching, and even with Glare you may not outspeed.

Dunsparce is the kind of pokemon you'd just keep around the house like a bulldog or something. Sitting on your lap while you surf channels, hiding under the table to eat whatever you drop, and napping on the foot of your bed at night.

Also Serene Grace Rockslide and Slam are disgusting in double battles + Coil & Roost for retarded sustainability make it cancer with the right teammate.

Dunsparce was unironically decent in Gen 3. It was before the massive power creep, and the combo of Thunder Wave/Body Slam plus Headbutt/Rock Slide for Paraflinch made it not the worst thing ever. Even in Gen 4 it wasn't unusable, but the power creep after killed it for good.

Dunsparce's only novelty was that it was super fucking rare in Gen II, much like the mythical creature it is based on (tsuchinoko). Too bad that point was ruined as of Gen III, where Dunsparce can be found in a very convenient post-game location in FRLG. Ever since Gen V, Dunsparce has been marked as an early-game mon that you have to go out of your way to get.

Heck I'd say Farfetch'd had more use considering it was going to receive an evolution in Space World and also having one of the first boosting items being the Stick.
