What's the point if we've seen little of him? Given that Masuda's translator said during the Treehouse that he's a "scaredy-cat" and the dialogue we've seen from him is just as lifeless and saccharine as the worst of Gen 6 and 7, I'm expecting him to be a groan-inducing cardboard cutout. I don't even necessarily require badass or tough rivals, I just want the rivals to have understandable goals without being solely defined by them. If their only characteristic is "going on an adventure alongside you" and a personality trait straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon, then I'm going to hate them.

He is supposed to be a rival, I don't need overly friendly dude humping my leg in every other town. You can be friends with someone and trashtalk each other, just to laugh afterwards because you know you are joking. Especialy on a journey to become the best trainer, one that we are supposed to have in Pokemon games. I don't need him praise and adore me every 5 minutes, and given how "friends" acted in several previous games, I doubt we will get anything different now. Potions are relevant, because from what little we saw, that's something they decided to showcase. Right now he is the potions dude who wants senpai to notice him.
