First off, the fuck is nintendo doing? Switch is already a portable/console hybrid. Why do they need ANOTHER handheld? And for the love of all that is good and holy please don't put Gen 8 on it.

Secondly, why in the jumping jack fuck do we need Sinnoh remakes? Did we not learn our lesson from ORAS? Sinnoh doesn't need to be ruined by Gamefreak's inability to make a balanced and challenging game.

There are still 3DS games coming out next year, even if they're very safe like a Luigi's Mansion port and a remake of Bowser's Inside Story. This tells me that they still find value in the platform, but they won't actively push it any further. They'll probably just make more stock of the New 2DS XLs or new 3DS XLs when needed, but their main and primary focus is the Switch. There wasn't even any 3DS focus at E3 at all I'm pretty sure.
To make a successor system would just be foolish when the 3DS has already established itself and the Switch is already still trying to establish itself AND is technically already a portable.

If it follows on from every other handheld, they'll stop production for most of them down late 2020 leaving the 2DS and New 2DS XL, the budget systems, for another 3 years or so.

It's always been around 18 months after main series Pokémon releases for the new system. Not sure if they'll go from LGP/LGE or Gen 8 this time but it'll probably be somewhere around there.

They've deliberately called it a 3ds successor, not a Switch successor. They've pretty much abandoned the idea of the Switch being a console/portable hybrid, since virtually everyone keeps it docked.

I thought the Switch was only doing so well because Nintendo was smart enough to release their AAA franchises early in the system's life. It also helps that nobody had a WiiU, so they can just port WiiU games to the Switch and sell them to people who didn't get to play them.

You have to take the time to develop the software, you moron. Which takes away from the one not being developed for just as the Wii U and 3DS did for each other.

That's why the upcoming one will be a handheld only Switch releasing October/November next year most likely alongside Gen 8 just as the 2DS did alongside 6 and the DS lite was probably intended to be before Gen 4 got pushed back a year.

They combined their handheld and console dev teams some time ago now after telling their fucking investers it was their future, to replace both the Wii U and 3DS. They're not going to have a second system because it would be retarded and they know it.

They've got the perfect system for what they're doing now. They need variants to hit price points, but they do not need a separate system unless they wish to fail.

The Switch has a decent library for its first year, the question is if they can keep up the momentum. The PS4 had an even worse year when it came to exclusives and getting nothing but ports, but now there's plenty of games on there that appeal to me. I got BoTW on the Switch since I knew everything good on the Wii U would get ported, Mario Odyssey is decent, Fire Emblem Warriors is also pretty fun, and Mario Kart 8 was fun enough to get me to want a handheld version. There's also stuff like Smash Ultimate, Three Houses, and gen 8 to look forward to in the future. The thing that worries me is that if the 3DS does indeed get a succesor, we will start seeing years without any worthwhile games like we had on the Wii U and a once promising library feels bear in the longrun.

Xenoblade 2 was actually suprisingly much better than I anctipated, and that DLC coming in September looks like it could be its own game entirely. I know the Switch seems to have a lot of ports now but I wouldn't mind having the first Xenoblade ported since I never got around to playing it.

Pretty much the only games that would make sense to be handheld only are rhythm games or anything where the gameplay relies heavily on touch controls. If they made something like Pokemon handheld only that would be extremely unnecessary and petty of the developers who want players to play a certain way.

I wish I could 100% believe that, but there were articles like this last year too. The more it's being reported, the more likely an E3 will come come with Nintendo saying "Hey, we know we have a system that's capable of acting as both a console and handheld, but here's a new handheld anyways!" It'll be the Switch's version of the 2DS, a budget handheld-only Switch locked at 720p. Why can't people just let go of the fucking 3DS already? Were people still waiting for an N64 2 after the GameCube came out? I just don't get it. Nintendo fans are on a whole different level of stupid.

making another portable is how nintendo can basically piss away all of the switch's success, because the whole point of switch was, or at least, should have been to consolidate their home console and handheld market into one elegant product that does both well. making a 3DS2 while Switch exists would be just as idiotic as making a "Gamecube2" while Switch exists.
