At that altitude, a planet shouldn't look curved, which means the artist decided to go with a pronounced wide-angle lens effect for the background. That would be OK, except he then disregarded it completely for the character, who shows no signs of lens deformation.
Now, add the fact that there are two distinct light sources, AKA two suns, and the result is an awkward superimposed effect that makes it seem like the bird-man figure is a guy being shot in front of a green screen.
